Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Movie Review

Karan Johar, in spite of his stupendous success both as producer and in spite of receiving continued commercial success as a director, seems to still be in search of validation as a Director. In ADHM, his quest to be taken seriously, makes him take a promising and relatable premise - unrequited love- (after all, haven't most of us been at atleast one of the ends of an unrequited love story )and turn it into a tale that paints a grim and hopeless picture for love as an idea or an emotion. What struck me as odd was that, out of the 4 love stories depicted in some form or fashion in the movie (SRK-Ash, Ash-Ranbir, Ranbir-Anushka, Anuska-Fawad), not even one has a remotely positive ending. There is divorce, infidelity and even death, but nothing to redeem the viewer and cheer him/her up at the end of 160-170 minutes. Personally, I didn't mind the movie so much..Anushka and Ranbir have a crackling screen chemistry, their turn as bollywood fanboy and fangirl really fun for the most part, Aishwarya as the older temptress is positively sexy,(even if one missed the point of that deviation in plot) and Fawad-even in his blink and miss role-totally yummilicious. To that, add exquisite costumes, brilliant music and superb locations and you have a good enough movie to watch. Now if only,KJo had gone the whole nine yards and given us a proper holiday feel-good movie that one left the movie hall feeling happy about.
