Happy Bhaag Jayegi : Film Review

In all the din created by Big budget, but mediocre films like Rustom and Mohenjodaro..comes a small, joyous film : Happy Bhaag Jayegi - A convoluted tale of a runaway bride who accidentally ends up in Lahore, Pakistan. The movie has a one line story, a twisted plot and is totally over the top : and yet, I dont remember the last time I sat in a movie hall surrounded by raucous laughter pretty much from the beginning through its cliched end. The story line of a runaway bride and a man charged with the task of reuniting her with her lover - finding himself on the way..has been done before : with Jab We Met and the ilk. What makes 'Happy' different is how the movie brilliantly utilizes the similarities and differences between Lahore and Amritsar, between Indians and Pakistanis to drive home the point that we are all, at our core, more similar than different. There are crooks on both sides and so are good people. To me the highlight of the movie, Abhay Deol apart, was getting to see how 'normal' life and people in a big city like Lahore are shown to be : not the caricatures routinely used as props and villians in most other movies. Overall a great watch..this is Diana Penty's break out role..even if one does wonder if the role would've sat better on Alia Bhat's shoulders. Or Kangana's or a younger Kareena's.
