As I went through one more Diwali, I realised that Diwali for me, means a definite set of experiences, without which, Diwali feels alien. When I sat to pen them down, these are what came up : Diwali is not Diwali for me, if I don’t wake up at 5.00 a.m. , have a head bath, wear new clothes and burst a cracker or two. This is my Tamilian heritage in action. Diwali doesn’t feel right without that Traditional Diwali breakfast - piping hot idlis and chutney, Maladu (south Indian Besan laddu), mixture and pakodam. Mysore-pak or coconut burfi would be a welcome addition. How can Diwali be Diwali without beautiful new Indian clothes for everybody in the family ? Oh and Diwali has to have chutti. At the risk of being politically incorrect, Diwali feels wrong without burning a sparkler or two, and yes a phooljhadi and chakra as well. Diwali feels dull without without the sound of crackers in the distant horizon, without the night-sky lit up with beautiful colors. Diwali is not Diwali without exchanging platters with my loved ones. Diwali is incomplete without colorful Rangolis adorning the front yard, without diyas all around my house, without colorful electric lights adorning my home. Diwali nowadays means that I sit and paint diyas just for fun. Diwali is not Diwali anymore, without taash parties, an acquired taste in the last few years. In these days of Social Media, Diwali now includesmore generic messages like this one, and less one to one messaging. Yes, these are what make my Diwali complete. These made my Diwali, Diwali. What make Diwali, Diwali for you ?
