S Durga : Film Review

S Durga (Malayalam)is a film with many messages : that the status of a woman - and if she is fair game - depends on who she is with, at what time, where she is from and if her relationship is perceived to be kosher or not. It deals with contemporary themes of misogyny, xenophobia, bigotry, and the dichotomy in Indian society between the status of a regular woman vs a goddess. A short, taut, road film that deals with a young couple eloping (somewhere in Kerala) and seeking help from a bunch of hooligans enroute, it has you gripping your seat from start to finish. The movie, aptly conveys that molestation can take many forms, in our patriarchal, puritanical society, The movie is tense to watch, and leaves you thinking well after you leave. S Durga is firmly arthouse fare - and those seeking any hint of mainstream entertainment will be firmly disappointed. I walked away with mixed feelings about the movie, mostly because for a film that aims to be very very realistic, the plot had too many holes- I couldn’t understand why the eloping couple hadn’t planned their transport for eloping upfront, and why, inspite of their continued reservations, they kept going back to the same set of hooligans to help them get away. 2.5/5.

You are lucky that you moved to Mumbai. It is not playing anywhere in Pune.
